There are many reasons why you as a parent might want your child to go on an exchange.
Anna-Kate writes "I can speak from my own personal experience from going to 4 different families during my teenage years. I was a very timid little girl - I can remember vividly being welcomed by my first French exchange family. The whole family spread over the street waiting for the car to arrive - cheers and hugs followed from complete strangers. The family took me in as one of their own - they already had 5 children and numerous cousins. They took me to see the Eiffel tower and we went on a Bateau Mouche and then went to their holiday home in Normandy where days were spent playing on the beach. I have only happy memories of my time with them. I was only 10 at the time. I probably spoke very little French but my ear picked up the accent and intonation. Not only did it help me with my French at school, but it gave me enormous confidence. My self-esteem was boosted and I had made new friends." Bilingual children have a better understanding of our multi-cultural world, which is a definite advantage in these days of high tech high skilled jobs. In other words they are better equipped for competing in tomorrow's job market. It is such a valuable gift to give to your child and one that they will benefit from throughout their life.
